What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that emphasizes postural alignment, core strength, and muscle balance. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, it involves precise movements and breath control. Pilates is known for enhancing flexibility, agility, and endurance in the entire body without building bulk.

Practicing Pilates can offer several benefits that may contribute to a longer, healthier life. It improves muscle strength and tone, which can help maintain mobility and balance, reducing the risk of falls as one ages. Additionally, Pilates promotes better posture, which can alleviate and prevent back and joint issues. The focus on controlled breathing and movements can also reduce stress, promoting better mental health.

Overall, regular participation in Pilates can help maintain physical and mental well-being well into old age, potentially increasing longevity by keeping the body fit and active, and the mind focused and calm

"This studio is the best! It’s true Pilates with caring and highly experienced instructors. The studio is beautiful and has equipment not found in franchises. The owner, Heather, makes sure the small, five-person classes run smoothly and that the studio is always immaculate and inviting. The private instruction is top-notch and worth every penny. I absolutely love it."This studio is a hidden gem.

"I can’t say enough about Susan at Spring Theory Pilates. She has more knowledge than any instructor I’ve ever met, and, even more impressive, she continues to educate herself. Before we jump in, she always asks how my body is and then tailors the focus of that session to meet my needs for that day, as well as for my longterm goals. I’ve found my pilates home for life!

Mande B.

"Gentlemen... I can't tell you why you don't see more men doing Pilates. It makes no sense to me. As a man entering my senior years, I have found Pilates to be hugely challenging in a physical sense and very beneficial to this aging body of mine. Maintaining flexibility and physical strength isn't for the timid, but can add years to our lives when we are taught how to compensate for the aches and pains of normal aging. And THIS gym has what it takes to do that.

  • How does Reformer Pilates differ from Mat Pilates?

Reformer Pilates utilizes a machine called a Reformer, which offers resistance through springs and a sliding carriage. This resistance helps in performing a wider range of motions compared to Mat Pilates, providing a more intensive workout that targets specific muscle groups more effectively.

  • Is Pilates good for beginners?

Absolutely! Pilates is adaptable to all ages and fitness levels. Beginners can start with basic exercises and gradually progress to more advanced movements. Instructors often modify exercises to match an individual's needs and capabilities.

  • What types of equipment do you use at Spring Theory Pilates ?

Joseph Pilates developed several pieces of equipment to accompany the exercises in his fitness system, each designed to assist in performing the movements correctly while increasing resistance and enhancing the effectiveness of the workouts. Here’s a look at some of the key pieces we have in our studio:

    1. Reformer: Perhaps the most famous Pilates apparatus, the Reformer is a sliding carriage rigged with springs, ropes, and a pulley system. It provides resistance and supports smooth, flowing movements that engage multiple muscle groups.

    2. Cadillac (or Trapeze Table): This large apparatus includes a padded table surrounded by a metal frame with various bars, straps, springs, and levers. It is used to perform exercises that stretch and strengthen the body in a variety of positions, from lying down to sitting and standing.

    3. Wunda Chair: This looks like a small chair but with a pedal attached to springs. It can be used for a wide range of exercises, focusing particularly on the lower body and core. The Wunda Chair challenges balance and deepens core strength.

    4. Ladder Barrel: Comprising a ladder-like frame and a rounded barrel-shaped part, this equipment is used for exercises that enhance flexibility, strength, and posture. It supports the back and shoulders and allows a wide range of motion in the spine.

    5. Spine Corrector (Step Barrel): This is a smaller barrel used to perform exercises that stretch the spine, shoulders, and hips, while also enhancing core strength and flexibility.

These pieces of equipment are fun to sample and allow for a diverse range of exercises and modifications. Joseph Pilates designed many of these pieces of equipment for home use so they often resemble home furnishings.

  • Can Pilates help with back pain?

Yes, Pilates can be beneficial for individuals experiencing back pain. It strengthens the core muscles, which support the spine, leading to improved posture and reduced strain on the back. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program, especially if you have chronic back issues.

  • What should I wear to a Pilates class?

Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid loose-fitting clothes as they can get in the way or caught in the equipment. Pilates is usually performed barefoot or with socks that have grip on the bottom to prevent slipping on the equipment or mat.

  • Why the name Spring Theory?

Spring Theory is a play on string theory from metaphysics. In our minds the two relate because: according to string theory, everything in our universe is connected by these tiny, vibrating strings, just like in your body. And, just like moving one part of your body can affect another part instantly, things happening into one string affect another string far away, making the universe work in harmony, just like your body does when you’re doing Pilates.
